Top Ten Weight Loss Myths

Authored By Ben Fisher

Are you trying to lose weight fast? Okay, so who doesn’t? But the experts say, if you want to lose weight and keep it that way, involve in routines that help you achieve weight loss in a slow and steady manner. That would be a bit hard, not seeing the results right away, but over months you will realize that it’s the best way after all. When you are right on your tracks, a little high caloric diet here and there won’t make much of a difference.

Following are a few myths associated with weight loss that you should be aware of.

1. Dieting Will Help You Lose Weight

Crash diets appeal the most to more people all over the world than anything else. What we don’t realize is that when we go on dieting, either crash or normal, we are depriving ourselves of some vital nutrients that might be damaging our health in some way. Moreover, one tends to gain more weight instead of losing while they are recovering from a crash diet. As these diets provide extremely low energy to the body, they make us crave even more for the sugary and high calorie things. When we finally give in, we eat more than usual and the pounds keep on increasing. So dieting is a no-no. But yes, you can make healthy choices to your diet. Just “think before you eat”.

2. I am Overweight because my Mother is

Okay, so now the genes get all the blame. Dr. Beranbaum of the School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University says genes do play a role but not that much as people would want to think. Genes do certainly play a role, but you still have a wide range of weights according to your genes, body and lifestyle. Why not choose to be on the lowest side?

3. Avoid Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy to our body. They are also a very essential part of our daily diet. Instead of avoiding carbohydrates totally, we can limit our consumption of the processed ones.

4. My Weight is not dropping even after Exercising and Dieting

You might think you are not eating that much, overall, but you could be eating too much in one time. This is the problem that many people don’t understand. All you need to do is to break up your meals in to three or five times a day and take small portions of it at one time.

5. Reduce Fat Intake

Low fat diets may be healthy, but they don’t really help if you consume too much of low fat products. A calorie is the main thing you need to keep a check on. Even if it is low fat, do not over eat it.

6. Eating out puts on extra kilos

It is again, only a myth. You can go out and eat but still be perfectly healthy if you could just make the right choices. Look out for places that provide you nutritional information and promote healthy eating. Just choose wisely and you will do fine, don’t worry.

7. Diet Pills can Make Me Lose Weight

One thing is, to slim down with a pill, you need to keep taking it. You remain slim for as long as you’re taking them. So avoid if you can.

8. Skip a Meal or Two

This option is a total no-no. When you skip a meal, your body goes into a starvation mode where it lowers its energy requirements and you feel low. But the worst thing is, your body starts reserving its caloric stores to prepare itself for the starvation period. So eat a little, but don’t skip.

9. I Need to Spot Reduce my Weight

You can spot work out, but you don’t really lose weight that way. This is because spot exercises can work on muscles but not on fat as we don’t really understand how our body is distributing fat throughout.

10. A Rigorous Exercise can make me Lose Weight

For success in the long run, you need to make changes to your eating habits and lifestyles that stay with you forever. Anything that asks too much cannot stick for long. You will give it up easily. Walking is the best exercise as it doesn’t ask too much, and it makes you lose weight steadily over time.
