Healthy Habits To Prevent Skin Aging

Healthy Habits To Prevent Skin Aging

Authored By Ben Fisher

Everybody wants to age gracefully.

It seems more and more men and women are making it a point to prevent their skin from aging. Can we really avoid it or, at the very least, slow it down?

The answer is yes.

Before you rejoice and scroll down further, you need to ask and understand the answer to this first: What exactly is causing our skin to age?

Skin is kept firm by proteins called elastin and collagen. These enable the skin to snap back into place when stretched. These proteins weaken over time. As a result, skin sags. Skin also loses fat as we age so our once plump and smooth skin eventually becomes rough. Genetics contributes to the aging process as well. Some look younger for their age while others look older for their age.

In essence, aging of the skin is inevitable, but one of the biggest signs of aging are wrinkles and these can actually be avoided.

Here are things you must avoid to achieve youthful skin:

Sun Damage

UV rays from the sun wreak havoc to the elastic fibers that help maintain skin’s firmness. This damage from the sun allows wrinkles as well as age spots to emerge.

The best way to prevent sun damage is to avoid excessive sun exposure especially between 10 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon. If you have to go out in broad daylight, wear protective clothing and, most importantly, apply sunscreen before going out.

Excessive Alcohol Intake

Alcohol dehydrates the whole body including your skin. Not only that, it deprives your body of nutrients. Heavy drinkers also have a tendency to eat unhealthily.

Poor Nutrition

Junk food is easy to eat but you get absolutely nothing from eating it. A proper diet ensures the body gets all the nutrients it needs to function. Our skin is no exception. Foods rich in antioxidants are essential sources of nutrients for the body.

Smoking

Cigarettes and tobacco contain toxic chemicals that cause internal as well as external damage to the body. Smoking decreases the flow of blood to the face and facial gestures typically made by smokers – squinting of the eyes and pursing of the lips – cause wrinkles.

Remember, it’s never too late to break unhealthy habits and start developing new ones to slow down skin aging.
